Southampton Returns To Premier League With Victory Over Leeds In Play-Off Final

Southampton secured an immediate return to the Premier League after Adam Armstrong's decisive goal led to a 1-0 victory over Leeds United in the Championship play-off final. Armstrong, Southampton's top scorer, netted his 24th league goal of the season at Wembley Stadium on Sunday, ensuring Russell Martin's side's promotion to England's top division.

The match marked only the third second-tier play-off final between two sides relegated the previous year. Southampton joins Leicester City and Ipswich Town in achieving top-flight promotion, while Leeds must prepare for another season in the Championship. Daniel James came close for Leeds, hitting the crossbar late in the game.

Saints Beat Leeds for Premier League Spot

Daniel Farke's team started stronger, with Archie Gray and Wilfried Gnonto both having early chances. However, Southampton struck first after 24 minutes when Armstrong beat the offside trap and scored past Illan Meslier following a through ball from Will Smallbone. A shoulder injury forced David Brooks off soon after, but Southampton nearly doubled their lead before halftime.

Leeds sought an equaliser in the second half, with Crysencio Summerville curling a shot just wide and substitute James hitting the crossbar again six minutes from time. Despite these efforts, Southampton held on to secure their return to the Premier League.

Southampton were appearing in their first-ever play-off final and had lost eight of their previous ten visits to Wembley. However, under manager Russell Martin, who has achieved five promotions as a player and three to the top flight overall, they ended this streak. Armstrong's 24 goals this season are the most by a Southampton player since Rickie Lambert scored 27 in 2011-12.

This victory also marked Southampton's 100th goal of the season, their first time reaching triple figures since the 2009-10 season under Alan Pardew. For Leeds, this defeat adds to their play-off woes, having now failed to secure promotion in six play-off appearances. The last team to fail to get promoted after scoring first in a Championship play-off final was Cardiff City in 2010.

Leeds' third play-off final disappointment comes just over 16 years after their loss to Doncaster Rovers in League One on May 25, 2008. Farke missed the chance to join Steve Bruce and Neil Warnock as managers with three Premier League promotions, following his successful campaigns with Norwich City in 2018-19 and 2020-21.
