Late Csoboth Goal Ends Scotland's Euro 2024 Journey Amid Vargas Injury Concern

Scotland's hopes of advancing in Euro 2024 were dashed when Kevin Csoboth scored a stoppage-time winner for Hungary, securing a 1-0 victory on Sunday. Csoboth, who had earlier hit the woodwork, netted the decisive goal at 99 minutes and 32 seconds, the latest ever in a European Championship match excluding extra time.

The win propelled Hungary to three points in Group A, keeping their knockout-stage aspirations alive. However, there was concern as Barnabas Vargas was stretchered off following a head injury after colliding with Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn. The lengthy stoppage for Vargas' injury contributed to the extended added time.

Scotland Out of Euro 2024

Csoboth's goal came after he connected with Roland Sallai's cross, slotting it into the bottom-left corner. This late strike saw Steve Clarke's Scotland drop to the bottom of their group with just one point, extending their wait for a knockout-stage appearance at a major tournament to 12 attempts.

Scotland's performance did little to suggest they deserved progression. Their best opportunity came when Stuart Armstrong was brought down by Willi Orban, but penalty appeals were dismissed by the referee and upheld by VAR. Scotland failed to capitalize on their chances and were ultimately punished by Csoboth's late goal.

FULL TIME: Scotland 0-1 Hungary. The referee concluded the match in Stuttgart following Hungary's late goal.

This marks Scotland's 12th major tournament group stage appearance, and they have failed to win a single match in half of those tournaments—1954, 1958, 1986, and 1998 World Cups, as well as Euro 2020 and 2024. Clarke’s side managed just 17 shots throughout this tournament, tying with Northern Ireland at Euro 2016 for the fewest by any nation in a group stage since its introduction in 1980.

Meanwhile, Hungary ended an eight-match winless streak in Euros with this victory, their first since defeating Austria 2-0 at Euro 2016. Marco Rossi’s team remains in contention for a spot in the last 16.
