Scotland's Clarke Balances Discipline And Support After Germany Rout
Steve Clarke revealed he had to employ a mix of stern words and encouragement after Scotland's heavy defeat to Germany in their Euro 2024 opener. Despite the setback, Clarke remains confident in his team's self-belief. Scotland faced a crushing 5-1 loss against Germany in Munich on Friday, marking their worst defeat in an opening game at any European Championship.
Germany's goals came from Florian Wirtz, Jamal Musiala, Kai Havertz, Niclas Fullkrug, and Emre Can. Ryan Porteous was sent off for a severe challenge on Ilkay Gundogan. This was the first time Scotland had conceded five or more goals since a 5-1 friendly loss to the United States in 2012 and the first in a competitive match since a 6-0 defeat to the Netherlands in Euro 2004 qualifying.

Additionally, Scotland failed to register a shot on target in a major tournament game for the first time since Euro 1992, where they lost 1-0 to the Netherlands. Clarke addressed the aftermath of the defeat on Sunday, stating, "Kick a couple of backsides, give some cuddles, make the players understand why the Germany result happened and make sure it doesn't happen again."
Clarke mentioned he had discussions with key players whose opinions he values. "I had a good chat with a few of them. I think their interpretation of what we asked them to do was wrong, so we've worked on that," he added. Scotland now faces Switzerland on Wednesday, who started their Group A campaign with an impressive 3-1 victory over Hungary.
The Tartan Army risks losing their first two matches at a tournament for the fourth time, having done so at the 1954 and 1986 World Cups and Euro 1992. However, Clarke remains optimistic about his team's morale. "We believe in ourselves; there's no danger of that. We know it was a bad night. We have to accept all the criticism that comes our way and then we have to put it right," Clarke stated.
Clarke emphasized the resilience required in football, underscoring his belief that his team can bounce back from this setback. The upcoming match against Switzerland will be crucial for Scotland as they aim to recover from their opening defeat and regain momentum in their Euro 2024 campaign.
