Saka's Penalty Moment Compared To Pearce By An Emotional Lineker
Gary Lineker, a former England striker, was deeply moved by Bukayo Saka's penalty against Switzerland. He likened it to Stuart Pearce's memorable spot-kick at Euro 1996. England faced a potential quarter-final exit from Euro 2024 until Saka equalised with a stunning goal, nullifying Breel Embolo's opener just 10 minutes before the end.
Lineker, who played in the England team defeated by West Germany on penalties at the 1990 World Cup, recalled Pearce's missed penalty in that match. Pearce later redeemed himself by scoring in a shoot-out against Spain at Euro 1996. Saka's redemption brought back those memories for Lineker.

Saka, whose missed penalty cost England the Euro 2020 final against Italy, stepped up again and converted his shot during the shoot-out. The Three Lions scored all five of their attempts, with Jordan Pickford saving Manuel Akanji’s shot. This victory marked only the fourth time England has won a penalty shoot-out in their history and set up a semi-final clash with the Netherlands on Wednesday.
Speaking on The Rest is Football podcast, Lineker said about Saka’s kick: "I did actually get a little bit emotional. It reminded me so much of the Stuart Pearce moment." He added that Pearce missed in 1990 when he played and described him as "a diamond of a bloke and a wonderful football player."
Saka’s goal made him only the third Arsenal player to score for England at the Euros, following Tony Adams in 1988 and Theo Walcott in 2012. He is also the first Arsenal player to score for England in both the World Cup and the Euros, having netted three times in Qatar two years ago.
Lineker shared his emotions from watching Pearce’s redemption: "When he knocked that in, I cried. I was sitting there in the crowd, crying tears of joy." He explained that he cries when happy and that Saka’s moment reminded him of that feeling.
The Arsenal winger’s performance was crucial for England as they advanced to face the Netherlands. His ability to bounce back from past disappointments showcased his resilience and talent on an international stage.
