Cristiano Ronaldo Breaks European Record With 50th Major Tournament Appearance
Cristiano Ronaldo has set a new milestone by becoming the first European player to make 50 appearances in major tournaments. This achievement was marked during Portugal's Group F match against Georgia at Euro 2024 on Wednesday. Ronaldo debuted in major tournaments at Euro 2004, where he helped Portugal reach the final, only to lose to Greece.
Ronaldo, who has been a constant presence in both Euros and World Cups since his debut, finally won the elusive European Championship trophy in 2016. The five-time Ballon d'Or winner is no stranger to setting records and is playing in his sixth European Championship at the age of 39. Despite not scoring at Euro 2024 before the final group matchday, he assisted Bruno Fernandes in Portugal's 3-0 win over Turkiye, marking his seventh assist in the competition—the most by any player.

Ronaldo holds the record for most appearances at the Euros, with his start against Georgia being his 28th game in the tournament. Only two of these appearances were as a substitute, both occurring at the beginning of Euro 2004. He scored his first goal in the competition as a substitute during Portugal's opening match against Greece, which ended in a 2-1 defeat.
Ronaldo's record includes scoring 14 goals from 146 shots in European Championships, surpassing France's Michel Platini, who scored nine goals all at Euro 1984. The delayed Euro 2020 was Ronaldo's best individual performance as he netted five goals to win the Golden Boot award, sharing it with Czechia's Patrik Schick.
Portugal’s all-time leading scorer has always been a formidable threat to goalkeepers. In addition to his goals, Ronaldo has created 46 chances (including assists), with five of those coming in the first two matches of this edition. However, despite adding a European Championship trophy to his accolades, Ronaldo has yet to win a World Cup.
World Cup Pursuits
The closest Ronaldo came to winning the World Cup was in Germany in 2006 when Portugal finished fourth. Over five World Cups, he has made 22 appearances and scored eight goals from 102 shots. Only two of these appearances were off the bench, both occurring during Qatar 2022 when Portugal was eliminated by Morocco in the quarter-finals.
In only one World Cup edition did Ronaldo score more than once—netting four times in 2018. Despite these efforts, FIFA’s top prize remains elusive for him. Currently, Ronaldo and Roberto Martinez’s squad are focused on achieving European glory rather than dwelling on past World Cup disappointments.
This landmark achievement further cements Cristiano Ronaldo’s legacy as one of football’s greatest players. His contributions continue to inspire fans and aspiring athletes worldwide.
