Cristiano Ronaldo Targets Second European Championship Victory With Portugal
Cristiano Ronaldo is set to participate in his record sixth European Championship, aiming for a second title with Portugal. The 39-year-old scored 10 goals in Euro 2024 qualifying, second only to Belgium's Romelu Lukaku, who netted 14. Despite not being a guaranteed starter under Roberto Martinez, Ronaldo continues to demonstrate his value when called upon.
In a recent friendly against the Republic of Ireland, Ronaldo scored twice, marking his 34th brace at the international level. As he approaches what could be his final major tournament for Portugal, the five-time Ballon d'Or winner remains eager to end on a high note. "Playing for the national team is a passion, a love," Ronaldo told Record. "Any game is special. A European Championship is special."

Ronaldo has scored in every calendar year since his senior debut in 2004, amassing 130 goals in 270 appearances. His first goal against Ireland was a powerful shot into the top corner, which he considers one of his best with his left foot. "I need to rewind, but with the left foot it must be at the top," he said. "The most important thing is that the team played well."
Portugal has won five of their last nine meetings with the Republic of Ireland, losing just once and drawing three times. Heading into their Group F opener against Czech Republic, Portugal has had mixed results in 2024, winning three and losing two games. Ronaldo did not play in the recent 2-1 loss to Croatia and his starting position against Czech Republic remains uncertain.
"I knew I was going to rest against Croatia," Ronaldo explained. "The most important is the game on the 18th [vs Czech Republic] - we want to start the Euros in the best possible way." He emphasised his commitment to professionalism and readiness to support the team regardless of whether he plays or not.
Joao Felix also scored in the win over Ireland, marking his first goal in five appearances for Portugal and his eighth overall. Martinez's squad will follow their match against Czech Republic with games against Turkiye and Georgia.
| Player | Goals | Appearances |
|---|---|---|
| Cristiano Ronaldo | 130 | 270 |
| Joao Felix | 8 | - |
| Romelu Lukaku (Belgium) | 14 (Euro 2024 Qualifying) | - |
The Selecao's mixed form this year adds an element of unpredictability as they head into Euro 2024. However, with experienced players like Ronaldo and emerging talents like Felix, Portugal remains a formidable contender.
