Euro 2024: Romania Tops Group E, Slovakia Advances After Draw
Romania advanced to the Euro 2024 knockout stages as unexpected Group E winners, with Slovakia also progressing after a 1-1 draw against them in Frankfurt on Wednesday. Razvan Marin's penalty in the first half equalised Ondrej Duda's early header, resulting in both teams sharing points. In the other group match, Belgium and Ukraine played out a goalless draw.
Despite knowing that a draw would suffice, Slovakia started aggressively and missed several chances before finally scoring. Duda headed Juraj Kucka's cross from the right into the bottom-right corner. Shortly after, Ianis Hagi was fouled near the box, and VAR overturned an initial free-kick decision to award a penalty, which Marin converted emphatically.

All four teams in Group E ended up with four points each. Romania topped the group due to goals scored and will face the best third-place team from Groups A, B, C, or D in Munich on Tuesday. Slovakia secured third place and will meet either England or Spain in the next round. Domenico Tedesco's side narrowly made it through in second place.
Marin nearly scored again just after the hour mark with a curling shot that went over the bar. Lukas Haraslin also came close for Slovakia but missed narrowly wide. Neither team could find a winning goal as time ran out.
Razvan Marin has now scored twice in his last three games for Romania across all competitions, matching his tally from his previous 54 appearances combined. His penalty marked Romania's third European Championship penalty since Euro 2016; no team has managed more during this period (excluding shootouts).
Kucka assisted Slovakia's opening goal, marking his second assist at a major tournament—the first being 14 years ago against Italy at the 2010 World Cup. This is the longest gap between assists at major tournaments for any European player.
Historical Milestones
Duda became the first Slovakian player to score at two major tournaments, having also netted at Euro 2016. His goal against Romania added another milestone to his international career.
The match statistics highlighted some interesting data points: "Thanks to Razvan Marin's emphatic spot-kick, Romania have scored three European Championship penalties since the start of Euro 2016; no team's managed more (excluding shootouts). This is just their sixth Euros game in that time." - Opta Analyst (@OptaAnalyst) June 26, 2024.
Romania’s progression as group winners was unexpected but well-deserved based on their performance throughout the group stage matches. Their next challenge awaits them in Munich where they will face one of the best third-place teams from other groups.
