Rashford And Henderson Left Out Of England Squad For Euro 2024
Marcus Rashford and Jordan Henderson have been left out of Gareth Southgate's 33-man preliminary squad for England's Euro 2024 campaign. Rashford, who scored 30 goals in all competitions for Manchester United in 2022-23, has had a disappointing 2023-24 season, netting only seven goals in 33 Premier League appearances.
Newcastle United's Anthony Gordon has been called up in place of Rashford for the upcoming friendlies against Bosnia and Herzegovina and Iceland. Henderson, who moved from Liverpool to Al-Ettifaq last year, has also been omitted. His move to Ajax in January did not secure him a spot in Southgate's squad.
Henderson's exclusion has paved the way for Adam Wharton, who joined Crystal Palace from Blackburn Rovers in January. Wharton has contributed significantly to Palace's top-half Premier League finish under Oliver Glasner. Palace accumulated 24 points in 13 games since Glasner took charge on February 24.
Eberechi Eze, Wharton's Palace teammate, is also included after scoring 11 goals and providing four assists this season. Liverpool's Curtis Jones is another uncapped midfielder making the squad. Southgate faces several fitness concerns among his defenders, with Chelsea full-backs Reece James and Ben Chilwell missing out due to injury-hit campaigns.
James returned from a long-term hamstring injury recently but was sent off in his final game of the season. Chilwell was limited to just 756 minutes across 13 Premier League appearances this campaign. Liverpool's Jarell Quansah, Everton's Jarrad Branthwaite, Palace's Marc Guehi, and Brighton's Lewis Dunk are included at centre-back alongside regulars Harry Maguire and John Stones.
Luke Shaw is also in despite missing significant periods through injury. Captain Harry Kane is present after missing the end of Bayern Munich's season with a back issue that required treatment in England. Southgate will reduce his squad to 26 players after England faces Iceland at Wembley Stadium on June 7.
