Raducanu Leverages England's Euro 2024 Grit For Wimbledon Success

Emma Raducanu drew inspiration from England's comeback victory over Slovakia at Euro 2024 ahead of her Wimbledon debut. On Monday, Raducanu received a boost when her initial first-round opponent, world number 22 Ekaterina Alexandrova, withdrew due to illness. Despite this advantage, the 2021 US Open champion had a shaky performance but managed to defeat lucky loser Renata Zarazua 7-6 (7-0) 6-3 on Centre Court.

Raducanu compared her match to England's win, where Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane secured an extra-time victory despite a lacklustre display. She believes that sometimes winning ugly is necessary. "I was nervous; I think everyone could see that in my tennis, but at the end of the day you have to do whatever it takes to get over the line," said Raducanu, who wore an England shirt during practice on Sunday. "Honestly, watching the football [on Sunday], it was winning ugly – it all counts."

Raducanu mentioned that the late change in her opponent affected her preparation. "For the past three days, I've been playing and setting up practice for similar opponents and then it is a change of plan," she explained. "It took a little bit of adjusting and finding my feet." She expressed gratitude for the support she received during crucial moments and enjoyed playing back at Wimbledon.

The young tennis star is set to face Elise Mertens in the next round and is thrilled with her progress so far. "I said I'd be over the moon if I won my first round here, and I really am," Raducanu shared. "I feel the joy of being on site, the joy to be part of the buzz. I'm really just enjoying myself."

Raducanu's journey continues as she aims to build on her solid grass-court performances this season. Her determination and ability to adapt will be crucial as she advances in the tournament.
