Qatar And Saudi Arabia Selected To Host Asian Playoff Matches For FIFA World Cup 2026
The AFC has announced the hosts for the Asian playoff matches in the run-up to the FIFA World Cup 2026. Qatar and Saudi Arabia have been chosen to oversee these critical matches. This part of the qualification process is known as "AFC Asian Qualifiers - Road to 26". This step marks a significant phase in determining which teams will progress towards the 2026 World Cup.
Scheduled between 8th and 14th October 2025, the playoff matches will see six teams compete in a centralised format. These teams are the UAE, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Iraq, and Indonesia, all of which secured either third or fourth place in their groups during the earlier qualification rounds. This setup ensures an intense competition as teams vie for a spot in the World Cup.
The format for these playoffs divides the six teams into two groups, each containing three teams. The top team from each group will earn a direct ticket to the FIFA World Cup 2026. This straightforward method ensures that two teams can secure their World Cup places without further playoffs.
However, the journey doesn't end for the second-placed teams in each group. They will engage in a challenging two-legged playoff match scheduled for 13th and 18th November 2025. The winner of this head-to-head will move forward to the intercontinental playoff stage, keeping their World Cup dreams alive.
To set the stage for these pivotal matches, the AFC has planned the draw for the playoff round on 17th July 2025. This event will determine the grouping of the competing teams, adding clarity to the road ahead as they prepare for their matches in Qatar and Saudi Arabia.
