Euro 2024 Clash: It's More Than Just Ronaldo Vs Mbappe, Insists Martinez

Roberto Martinez emphasises that Portugal's Euro 2024 quarter-final against France is not just a showdown between Cristiano Ronaldo and Kylian Mbappe. The match, set for Friday in Hamburg, offers the winner a semi-final spot against either Germany or Spain. Despite the hype around Ronaldo and Mbappe, Martinez insists the game will be decided by team performance.

Martinez downplays the notion that Friday's match revolves around stopping Mbappe. He states, "Suffering is part of life, it's part of football, part of everything. We can promise that we will give everything, the players are focused on playing, and football is a team sport. Tomorrow is not a two-player game." He acknowledges the influence both Ronaldo and Mbappe have but stresses the importance of overall team effort.

Beyond Ronaldo vs Mbappe

Ronaldo has faced criticism for his performance so far, particularly after attempting four unsuccessful direct free-kicks against Slovenia. His record shows 60 attempts at direct free-kicks in European Championship or World Cup matches, with only one goal scored against Spain in the 2018 World Cup. When asked about possibly removing Ronaldo from set-piece duties, Martinez responded: "That passes me by. The players practice in training and Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes have that responsibility. We are fortunate to have two players with a very good profile to do it."

Mbappe's Tournament Journey

Mbappe has also had a challenging tournament. He broke his nose in France's Group D opener against Austria but returned to score a penalty in their third match against Poland. Despite his efforts, France finished as runners-up in their group and have yet to score from open play in this tournament.

Portugal aims to draw inspiration from their Euro 2016 final victory over France when Eder scored an extra-time winner after Ronaldo was injured. Reflecting on how the current squad compares to the 2016 champions, Martinez said: "I don't like to compare generations. This generation has a different path. We are a better generation, but in 2016 we had a victory in the final."

The anticipation surrounding this quarter-final clash is high due to the star power of Ronaldo and Mbappe. However, both teams understand that success will depend on collective performance rather than individual brilliance.

The upcoming match promises intense competition as both teams vie for a place in the semi-finals. Fans eagerly await to see if Portugal can replicate their past success or if France will overcome their challenges to advance further.

This quarter-final encounter between Portugal and France is set to be an exciting display of football prowess, with both teams determined to secure victory and move closer to lifting the Euro 2024 trophy.
