Portsmouth Holds To Goalless Draw At 10-Man Blackpool, Lead Narrows

Despite a challenging match against Blackpool, Portsmouth boss John Mousinho maintained a positive outlook after his team was held to a goalless draw. The match saw Portsmouth's lead at the top of Sky Bet League One decrease to five points, as they struggled to find a way past a tenacious Blackpool team. This outcome came about even though Blackpool had to play with 10 men for a significant portion of the game following Jordan Rhodes' dismissal shortly before the break.

Mousinho expressed his disappointment at not securing a win but found solace in the team's performance. "We're disappointed with the point. We wanted to come here and win the game regardless of whether we were playing 10 or 11 men," he stated. Despite playing against 10 men for around 50-55 minutes and creating numerous chances, Portsmouth could not capitalize on these opportunities, much to Mousinho's dismay.

Portsmouth's Draw at Blackpool

However, Mousinho praised his team's effort and the openings they created during the match. He acknowledged Blackpool's strong defensive play and their commendable home record, which includes a victory over Bolton. "Blackpool have one of the best home records in the league. They beat Bolton here. They sit in and defend really well," Mousinho remarked.

The red card shown to Rhodes was a point of contention for Mousinho, who deemed it harsh but conceded that Blackpool deserved to be a man down for a different incident involving Callum Lang. "I thought the red card was harsh... I thought the challenge on Callum Lang is far worse, and that's a straight red," he explained.

Neil Critchley, Blackpool's manager, shared Mousinho's view on the sending-off being severe but praised his team's resilience under pressure. "I'm really pleased we've picked up a point... It really puts you behind the game and gives you a mountain to climb," Critchley said, commending his team's character and defensive efforts against one of the league's top teams.

Team Spirit and Support

Critchley also highlighted the crucial role of the home crowd in bolstering the team's spirit during challenging moments. "The crowd were fantastic and really got behind us when we needed them... When everyone's together, it's brilliant," he added, emphasizing the positive impact of collective support on the team's performance.

In summary, while Portsmouth might have missed an opportunity to extend their lead at the top of League One, both managers recognized their teams' efforts and the competitive nature of the match. Despite facing setbacks, such as controversial refereeing decisions and playing with a numerical disadvantage, Blackpool managed to secure a valuable point against a strong Portsmouth side.
