Pochettino Aims For Squad Stability Over Transfers At Chelsea

Mauricio Pochettino believes maintaining continuity will be crucial for Chelsea as he prepares for his second season in charge. He has ruled out the possibility of another major squad overhaul at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea secured European qualification on the final day of the Premier League season with a 2-1 victory over Bournemouth, finishing sixth ahead of Newcastle United and Manchester United.

The Blues ended the campaign with five consecutive wins, a feat they last achieved in March 2022 under Thomas Tuchel. This positive conclusion to Pochettino's debut season has quelled speculation about his job security. He emphasises the importance of evolution rather than drastic changes as they look ahead to the 2024-25 season.

Chelsea's Stability Focus

"Does the club need new signings? Always, you can improve," Pochettino said after Sunday's win. "They are going to be much better next season because they will have one year of experience, a tough experience."

Pochettino highlighted the benefits of stability and consistency, stating, "Next season, if we keep 80 to 85 per cent of the squad, for sure it is a big step forward because it is about having continuity in the ideas and the knowledge between them. That is important for the club."

Chelsea only lost one of their final 15 matches of the Premier League season, securing nine wins and five draws. Their sole defeat came in a 5-0 loss to Arsenal in April. Only Manchester City, Arsenal (16 each), and Liverpool (12) won more Premier League games than Chelsea's 10 from January onwards.

The Blues scored 43 goals in that period, ranking fifth among all teams in the division. Their overall tally of 77 goals in the 2023-24 season was their third-highest in a Premier League campaign, behind their title-winning seasons of 2009-10 (103) and 2016-17 (85).

Notable Achievements

Moises Caicedo's goal for Chelsea was noteworthy as it was scored from a distance of 50.5 yards, making it the furthest goal in a Premier League game since Wayne Rooney's 57.7-yard strike for Everton against West Ham in November 2017.

Pochettino remains optimistic about the future, stating that maintaining a core group of players will be beneficial for the club's progress. "That is a club decision. Like it was from the beginning, we [the coaching staff] are going to be there to help and if not, we are going to do our job," he added.

As Chelsea looks forward to the next season, Pochettino's focus on continuity and building on this year's experiences aims to set a solid foundation for future success.
