Guardiola Expresses Regret Over Comment On Phillips' Weight

Manchester City's esteemed manager, Pep Guardiola, has extended an apology to midfielder Kalvin Phillips following comments he made regarding Phillips' weight after the Qatar World Cup. Guardiola had previously remarked in a December 2022 press conference that Phillips was left out of a Carabao Cup tie against Liverpool due to being overweight. This statement came to light after Phillips, who transitioned to West Ham on loan in January, shared with the Observer that Guardiola's public disclosure had impacted his confidence and overall sentiment towards his position at City.

During a recent press briefing, when questioned about his regret over making Phillips' weight issues public, Guardiola expressed remorse, stating, "Yeah, I'm sorry. Once in eight years is not bad. But I'm so sorry. I apologise to him. I do apologise. I'm sorry." He clarified that a misunderstanding regarding Phillips' expected return date contributed to the situation and emphasized that he had communicated with Phillips before discussing the matter publicly.

Guardiola Apologises to Phillips

The conversation occurred ahead of Manchester City's upcoming Premier League match against Brentford. The last encounter between the two teams resulted in a 3-1 victory for City at the Gtech Community Stadium on February 5. That game was notable for an incident involving City defender Kyle Walker and Brentford's Neal Maupay, which Guardiola acknowledged as an emotional moment that has since been resolved.

Guardiola also reflected on his own playing days at Barcelona, humorously noting his record for receiving the most yellow cards due to his tendency to vocally express himself on the pitch. He admitted that his reactions varied depending on his mood at the time.

The upcoming fixture against Brentford represents a crucial opportunity for third-placed City to close the gap with Premier League leaders Liverpool and second-placed Arsenal. The defending champions are currently trailing by four and two points respectively and are looking to bounce back from a 1-1 league draw with Chelsea that ended their 11-match winning streak across all competitions.
