Pedri Sets New Record For Young European In Major Tournament Appearances

Spain midfielder Pedri has broken Cristiano Ronaldo's record for the most major tournament appearances by a European player aged 21 or under. At 21 years and 218 days, Pedri made his 13th appearance in a European Championship or World Cup during Spain's last-16 match against Georgia at Euro 2024 on Sunday.

Pedri debuted for Spain's senior team as an 18-year-old in March 2021. He had a standout performance at the delayed Euro 2020, where Spain reached the semi-finals but lost to Italy in a penalty shoot-out. Pedri won UEFA's Young Player of the Tournament award, completing more passes in the opposition half (317) than any other player.

Pedri Breaks Ronaldo's Record

In the first two matchdays of Euro 2024, Pedri led all Spanish players in chances created (six), assisting Fabian Ruiz’s goal in their 3-0 win over Croatia. Despite La Roja exiting at the last-16 stage of the 2022 World Cup after only four matches, he ranked 12th among all players for open-play passes (426).

Manchester City defender Josko Gvardiol managed 11 major tournament appearances for Croatia before turning 22 earlier this year. This put him one behind Ronaldo but unable to draw level. Pedri’s new record might be challenged by England’s Jude Bellingham, who equalled Pedri’s tally of 12 earlier on Sunday when England faced Slovakia in the round of 16.

Bellingham became the first European player to appear at three different tournaments before turning 21 by scoring the winner in England’s opening Group C fixture against Serbia. He has featured at Euro 2020, the Qatar World Cup, and Euro 2024. Bellingham is also just the second player to score at both the Euros and World Cup while under 21, following Michael Owen.

Ronaldo's Early Achievements

Ronaldo had two goals and two assists as Portugal finished as runners-up to Greece at Euro 2004 on home soil. He then helped Portugal secure a fourth-place finish at the 2006 World Cup in Germany. These achievements set a high bar for young players like Pedri and Bellingham.

Pedri has started four Euros knockout stage games while aged 21 or under, more than any other player. This achievement surpasses Ronaldo’s tally of 12 tournament outings for Portugal before turning 22, which occurred during Euro 2004 and the 2006 World Cup.

Future Prospects

Bellingham could seize Pedri’s record if Spain exits early and England progresses further in this year’s competition. With Bellingham not turning 22 until next June, he has ample opportunity to surpass Pedri if circumstances align favorably for England.

The future looks promising for these young talents as they continue to make their mark on international football. Their performances are closely watched by fans and analysts alike, eager to see how they will shape the sport in years to come.
