Referee Paul Tierney To Miss Weekend Game After Nottingham Forest-Liverpool Match Controversy

In a recent turn of events that has stirred the Premier League waters, referee Paul Tierney, who found himself embroiled in a controversy during the Nottingham Forest versus Liverpool match last Saturday, will not be officiating a Premier League match this coming weekend. The incident in question revolved around Tierney's decision not to award a dropped ball to Nottingham Forest in a crucial attacking moment, following a pause in the game due to a head injury sustained by Liverpool's Ibrahima Konate.

Despite Nottingham Forest regaining possession post the contentious decision, the match concluded with Liverpool netting a goal in the 99th minute, leading to Forest's loss of a critical point in their battle for Premier League survival. In light of these events, Tierney has been appointed as the video assistant referee (VAR) for the upcoming Arsenal versus Brentford match on Saturday evening.

Paul Tierney Out After Game Controversy

Sources from within Professional Game Match Officials Ltd (PGMOL) have clarified that Tierney's absence from this weekend's Premier League refereeing lineup is not indicative of him being dropped. It is highlighted that Tierney is part of a cohort of officials who routinely switch roles between on-field referees and VARs.

Mark Clattenburg, a former Premier League referee now working with Nottingham Forest as a referee analyst on a consultancy basis, expressed his views on BBC Radio 5 Live, stating, "Forest should have had the ball back. If the referee stops the game, he has to give the ball back to the team in possession. That was Forest." He further elaborated on his disappointment with how the situation was handled post-match, including an unsuccessful attempt to discuss the matter directly with Tierney.

Following the controversial match, PGMOL has reportedly not received any further complaints from Nottingham Forest beyond Clattenburg's public comments. Additionally, it was noted that Forest's first-team coach Steven Reid was sent off by Tierney after entering the pitch at the game's conclusion to voice his protests. Contrary to circulating reports, Nottingham Forest has dismissed claims that club owner Evangelos Marinakis had to be restrained by security staff in the tunnel post-match.

This incident has undoubtedly sparked discussions and debates within the football community, highlighting the complexities and challenges faced by referees and officials in ensuring fair play and adjudication in the high-stakes environment of Premier League football.
