Paul Mitchell Takes Helm As Newcastle United's New Sporting Director

Newcastle United have announced Paul Mitchell as their new sporting director. Mitchell, who has previously worked with Southampton and Tottenham, takes over from Dan Ashworth, who recently moved to Manchester United. Ashworth's contract was initially set to last until mid-2025, but a compensation agreement between the two clubs expedited his departure.

Mitchell has been out of work since October 2023 after serving as the sporting director at AS Monaco in Ligue 1. His tenure in the Premier League began with Southampton, where he was instrumental in signing Toby Alderweireld and Sadio Mane. These successful transfers led to his move to Tottenham, where he played a key role in acquiring Dele Alli, Heung-Min Son, and Kieran Trippier.

I've seen the recent growth and ambition of the club. This, plus the amazing fan base, made the decision to join an easy one. I can't wait to get started and help continue the organisation's growth and long-term competitiveness in all areas of elite football performance."

Newcastle chief executive Darren Eales shared his enthusiasm about Mitchell's appointment: "We are delighted to welcome Paul to Newcastle United. He brings a successful track record and wealth of experience to the club. His extensive and diverse experience in football leadership, cultural change and recruitment mean he is the ideal person to lead our sporting directorate. We look forward to working with Paul and supporting him in our pursuit of long-term, sustainable success."

Mitchell’s journey also includes a stint at RB Leipzig starting in 2018 before moving on to AS Monaco. His varied experience across different leagues is expected to bring valuable insights into Newcastle’s strategic planning.

The 42-year-old Mitchell is eager to begin his role at St. James' Park, aiming to build on the club’s recent progress and ensure its competitiveness across all facets of elite football performance.
