Olympiacos Wins First Major European Honour In Dramatic Europa Conference League Final

Ayoub El Kaabi emerged as the hero as Olympiacos clinched their first major European honour with a dramatic 1-0 extra-time victory over Fiorentina in the Europa Conference League final. The decisive moment came in the 116th minute when El Kaabi scored at the AEK Arena, making Olympiacos the first Greek side to win a major European competition.

Fiorentina, who also lost to West Ham in last season's final, once again fell short at the final hurdle. The success marked a significant achievement for Olympiacos and head coach Jose Luis Mendilibar, who secured continental glory for the second consecutive year after winning the Europa League with Sevilla last season.

Olympiacos Wins Europa League

Daniel Podence tested Fiorentina goalkeeper Pietro Terracciano early on before Fiorentina thought they had taken the lead just nine minutes into the match. Cristiano Biraghi's cross found its way into Konstantinos Tzolakis' bottom-right corner, but Nikola Milenkovic was ruled offside for obstructing the Olympiacos goalkeeper.

Despite their celebrations being cut short, Fiorentina maintained their attacking momentum throughout the first half. Giacomo Bonaventura, who scored in last season's final defeat to West Ham, squandered the best chance of the half by shooting straight at Tzolakis from close range after 21 minutes.

Opportunities remained scarce after the break, but Fiorentina came close in the 69th minute when Dodo found Christian Kouame. Kouame's scuffed effort was pushed away by Tzolakis. Olympiacos nearly struck 11 minutes later when Francisco Ortega's free-kick was met by Iborra, but his header narrowly missed Terracciano's right-hand post.

Mendilibar introduced former Fiorentina striker Stevan Jovetic, who almost haunted his old club in the 96th minute with a strike that Terracciano tipped away. A penalty shoot-out seemed imminent when Tzolakis denied Jonathan Ikone, but El Kaabi had other plans.

The Decisive Moment

With just four minutes remaining in extra time, El Kaabi ghosted in to nod home Santiago Hezze's cross. After a lengthy VAR check for offside, the goal stood, sending Olympiacos fans into ecstasy and securing their historic victory.
