FA Charges Nottingham Forest And Coach Steven Reid For Referee Confrontation

Nottingham Forest and their first-team coach, Steven Reid, have found themselves in hot water with the Football Association (FA) following a heated confrontation with referee Paul Tierney. This incident occurred after Nottingham Forest's Premier League match against Liverpool on Saturday, which ended in a 1-0 defeat for Forest due to a late goal from Darwin Nunez.

The contention arose in stoppage time when Tierney made the controversial decision to award a dropped-ball to Liverpool in their penalty area, despite Forest being in possession and in an attacking position. This decision was made following a stoppage for a head injury to Liverpool's Ibrahima Konate. Mark Clattenburg, Forest's referee analyst, expressed dissatisfaction with Tierney's decision, highlighting that it contradicted the standard practice of returning possession to the team that had it before play was halted.

Reid's subsequent on-field remonstration led to his sending off, with allegations now surfacing that his language towards Tierney was "abusive and/or insulting". This has resulted in charges of misconduct against both Reid and Nottingham Forest. The club is accused of failing to ensure that its players and technical staff conducted themselves appropriately. Both parties have been given until March 13 to respond to these charges.

In the aftermath of the incident, there were reports suggesting that Forest's owner, Evangelos Marinakis, had pursued Tierney down the tunnel, although the club has clarified that while Marinakis did approach Tierney, he was not restrained as some reports suggested.

As a consequence of these events, Tierney will not officiate a Premier League game this weekend. Instead, he has been assigned as the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) for Arsenal's match against Brentford. Despite speculation, sources from the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) insist that Tierney has not been demoted from his refereeing duties.

Clattenburg's comments on BBC Radio 5 Live further fueled the controversy by stating that Forest deserved to retain possession after the game was stopped. He noted his attempt to discuss the matter directly with Tierney post-match but was denied access.
