Newcastle United Beats Tottenham In Penalties After Controversial Australia Friendly
Newcastle United triumphed over Tottenham Hotspur in a penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw in a controversial friendly match held in Melbourne. The game took place just three days after the conclusion of the Premier League season, drawing a crowd of 78,419 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
James Maddison, recently named in England's preliminary Euro 2024 squad, scored the opening goal for Spurs at the 32-minute mark. However, his teammate Kieran Trippier was substituted just four minutes later. Newcastle's Alexander Isak equalised right before half-time.

The second half saw no additional goals, leading to a penalty shootout. Bryan Gil's attempt was saved by Newcastle's Mark Gillespie, while the subsequent nine penalties were all successful. Newcastle emerged victorious with a 5-4 scoreline.

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe addressed concerns regarding Trippier's early substitution, clarifying that it was a pre-planned decision. "We spoke with Kieran and thought the best thing to do was for him to start the game," Howe stated. "He's still in the early stages of recovery from his calf problem; we didn't want to take risks with him so half an hour was the aim. No injury there."
Tottenham's manager Ange Postecoglou shifted focus to the upcoming transfer window after failing to secure a win in his home country. "Last year, it certainly benefited us having a couple in early and having all the whole squad for pre-season," he said. "Everyone wants to do business early, everyone is keen to bring players in but the reality of it is it usually takes a little bit of time."
Postecoglou added that Tottenham has had a plan in place for some time and is now looking to execute it during the transfer window.
