Netherlands Beats Turkiye In Euro 2024 Quarter-Finals: Van Dijk Reflects On Victory

The Netherlands secured a spot in the Euro 2024 semi-finals with a comeback win over Turkiye. Despite falling behind to Samet Akaydin's 35th-minute goal, they rallied to win 2-1. Stefan de Vrij equalised with a powerful header in the 70th minute, his first international goal since March 2015. Mert Muldur's own goal six minutes later sealed the victory.

Dutch captain Virgil van Dijk never doubted his team's ability to progress. "You know they're going to take a lot of risks, but now we're in the semi-finals," Van Dijk told reporters. "This is very important and very beautiful, with such a crowd. We knew there would be a lot of Turks in the stadium, but I'm proud of these guys."

Netherlands to Face England in Euro Semi-Finals

Van Dijk acknowledged that the team got sloppy at times but praised their overall performance. "In the end we got sloppy, but actually we didn't give anything away," he said. "In the second half, we had to stay calm and take advantage of our chances."

Stefan de Vrij was instrumental in turning the game around for the Netherlands. Reflecting on his equaliser, De Vrij said, "It was a great ball from Memphis and I was free, and I was convinced I had to put it in." He admitted that the team initially struggled with ball possession and were pushed back by Turkiye.

"Initially we were sloppy, with too much loss of ball possession," De Vrij noted. "They pushed us back and then we went behind to the header from a corner, but we kept believing."

Key Moments

The match was notable for being the only Euros quarter-final clash not to go into extra time. De Vrij's equaliser came from Memphis Depay's angled cross, which set up a thrilling finish. The Dutch side managed to hold on and secure their place in the semi-finals against England.

Van Dijk emphasised the importance of staying composed under pressure. "Of course, we thought it would be fine; it would be very bad if we didn't think so!" he said. "We are one step closer. We can get to work."

The victory marked the Netherlands' first appearance in the last four of this competition since 2004. The team will now face England on Wednesday in what promises to be an exciting semi-final clash.
