Van Dijk Admits Netherlands May Have Overestimated Their Euro 2024 Chances
Virgil van Dijk has suggested that the Netherlands might have overestimated their abilities ahead of Euro 2024. The team barely made it through Group D, finishing third behind Austria and France. A 3-2 loss to Austria in their final group match meant Ronald Koeman's side missed the chance to top a challenging group, instead ending up as one of the tournament's best third-placed teams.
The Dutch media have been highly critical of the team's performances, and Van Dijk acknowledges that internal expectations may have been set too high. "Maybe we overestimate ourselves," Van Dijk told reporters on Friday. "A lot had to be said and we had to analyse a lot. Things went completely wrong against Austria. It was very bad."
Despite their struggles, the Netherlands' position might work in their favour as they are now on the opposite side of the draw from heavyweights like Germany, Spain, Portugal, France, and Belgium. Before the tournament began, the Opta supercomputer gave them a 5.1% chance of winning. Now, their chances have increased to 7% ahead of their last-16 match against Romania.
Van Dijk emphasised that it wasn't tactics that failed them but rather the will to win and secure second balls. "It was not the tactics where things went wrong. It was mainly the will to win, to win that second ball," he explained. "You don't have to talk about that with the coaches; the players must do that among themselves." He added that harsh words were exchanged among players to address these issues.
The Liverpool defender also faced criticism for his own performance in the defeat against Austria. "I can completely understand the criticism," he said. "I'm not stupid; I also know that I can do better and that it should be better, and that's what I'm working on."
Van Dijk admitted he didn't play his best game against Austria and acknowledged that both he and the team need to improve as they advance in the tournament. "I didn't play my best game against Austria," he noted. "It does affect me; I also think that things overall can and should be better."
Focus on Improvement
Reflecting on his own performance, Van Dijk stated, "The whole team didn't run, but I look first at myself. I could have brought much more." This self-awareness highlights his commitment to improving both individually and as part of the team.
The Netherlands' journey through Euro 2024 has been challenging so far, but there is still hope for improvement as they prepare for their next match against Romania.
