Netherlands Urged To Enhance Clinical Finishing For Euro 2024 Triumph
Cody Gakpo and Ronald Koeman have emphasised the need for the Netherlands to be more clinical in their upcoming group matches to advance to the knockout stages of Euro 2024. This follows their victory over Poland, where Gakpo scored in the first half to equalise Adam Buksa's opener, and Wout Weghorst netted a late winner.
During the match in Hamburg, the Dutch team registered 21 shots, their highest in a major tournament since 2012, but only four were on target. In contrast, Poland managed seven shots on target from their 12 attempts. Both teams ended with an expected goals (xG) value of 1.26.

Gakpo highlighted the team's inefficiency in front of goal, stating that they would analyse their performance and aim to improve against France in Leipzig next Friday. "It was a tough game against a tough opponent," Gakpo said. "We created a lot of opportunities and some good chances, but we had to be more clinical."
Koeman echoed Gakpo's sentiments, noting that the team should have been leading by a larger margin. "I felt we should have been three or 4-1 up by then," Koeman said. "If you want to win, you must score goals, so we knew we needed to change something up front."
Weghorst's late contribution was significant as he scored the fastest goal by a Netherlands substitute at the European Championships, just two minutes and 18 seconds after coming off the bench. The Burnley striker, who was on loan at Hoffenheim for the 2023-24 season, stressed the importance of the win and expressed his ambition for the team to claim their second Euros crown.
"It is so important to get the early win and for me personally, it's a dream scenario," Weghorst said. "Our aim now is to leave with the trophy."
Poland's winless streak against the Netherlands continued, with their last victory dating back to 1980. Buksa's early goal made him the fourth Polish player to score on his European Championships debut, following Robert Lewandowski (2012), Arkadiusz Milik (2016), and Karol Linetty (2021).
Buksa expressed mixed feelings about the match, acknowledging that Poland had opportunities even after conceding the second goal. "Of course, the Netherlands were driving this match," Buksa said. "However, we had a good few situations even after conceding the second goal. It's too bad that we are finishing this game with zero points."
Historical Context
The Netherlands' victory marked only the third time they have won a Euro match after conceding first, previously achieving this against Germany in 1988 and France in 2000.
