Injury Rules Netherlands Midfielder Marten De Roon Out Of Euro 2024

The Netherlands will be without Marten de Roon at Euro 2024 after an injury blow capped a difficult period for the Atalanta midfielder. De Roon suffered a muscle injury two weeks ago in Atalanta's 2-0 Coppa Italia final loss to Juventus, subsequently missing Gian Piero Gasperini's side lifting the Europa League with victory over Bayer Leverkusen.

The Netherlands international was in the stands in Dublin for the 3-0 win over Xabi Alonso's Bundesliga champions that secured Atalanta's first European trophy. Having already been named in Ronald Koeman's 30-man provisional squad for the Euros in Germany, starting in June, De Roon suffered another setback after his absence was confirmed.

De Roon Misses Euro 2024

"I can't imagine I've had a week in my career, or in my life, that has had so many ups and downs," the Atalanta man wrote on social media on Monday. "Lost the Coppa Italia, couldn't play the final, win the Europa League. In that last euphoric state, I spent a lot of time with the medical staff: it turns out I can't play the Euros."

De Roon has won 42 caps for his country and featured at the last European Championships and the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. His absence means Koeman has to cut just six players down from his provisional squad for the final 23-man selection, which will be announced on Wednesday.

The Netherlands open their Euro 2024 campaign against Poland on June 16 before facing France and Austria in the group stages. Koeman's squad assembled on Monday for their pre-tournament training camp, ahead of warm-up matches with Canada and Iceland.

De Roon's injury is a significant blow to both his club and country. The midfielder expressed his disappointment but also showed support for his teammates. "I will get over it, I will watch the squad and my friends as a fan, but for now it's a very tough day," he added.

The Dutch team will need to adapt quickly to De Roon's absence as they prepare for their challenging group stage matches. The upcoming warm-up games will be crucial for Koeman to finalise his squad and tactics.

Atalanta's success in winning their first European trophy is a historic achievement for the club. However, De Roon's injury casts a shadow over their celebrations. The midfielder played a key role throughout the season and his absence was felt during the Coppa Italia final loss to Juventus.

Despite this setback, Atalanta managed to secure victory against Bayer Leverkusen, showcasing their resilience and depth. The club will now focus on preparing for next season without one of their key players.

Koeman's Selection Dilemma

Ronald Koeman now faces the task of finalising his squad for Euro 2024. With De Roon out, Koeman must decide which six players to cut from his provisional list. The upcoming warm-up matches will provide an opportunity for fringe players to stake their claim for a spot in the final squad.

The Dutch manager will need to carefully consider his options as he aims to build a team capable of competing against some of Europe's best sides. The group stage matches against Poland, France, and Austria will be a stern test for Koeman's squad.

Looking Ahead

The Netherlands' preparations for Euro 2024 continue despite De Roon's injury. The team remains focused on their goal of progressing through the group stages and making a deep run in the tournament. With experienced players and emerging talents, Koeman's squad has the potential to perform well.

As De Roon watches from the sidelines, his teammates will look to honour his contribution by delivering strong performances on the pitch. The Dutch fans will be hoping that their team can overcome this setback and achieve success at Euro 2024.
