Netherlands Defeats Turkiye 2-1 To Face England In Euro 2024 Semi-finals

The Netherlands secured a spot in the Euro 2024 semi-finals with a 2-1 win over Turkiye, thanks to Mert Muldur's own goal in Berlin. Samet Akaydin scored first for Turkiye at the Olympiastadion, but Stefan de Vrij equalised for the Dutch. Muldur's mistake under pressure from Cody Gakpo sealed the victory.

The match began with both teams creating half-chances. Cody Gakpo and Memphis Depay combined early on, but Depay missed the target. Salih Ozcan also had an attempt from distance that went wide. Turkiye capitalised on a set-piece ten minutes before halftime when Arda Guler's cross found Akaydin, who headed home his first goal for Turkiye.

Despite their efforts, Turkiye couldn't extend their lead after the break. Guler hit the post with a free-kick, and Kenan Yildiz forced Bart Verbruggen into a save. The Netherlands then took advantage of their escape five minutes later when Memphis Depay's short corner led to De Vrij's equaliser.

Denzel Dumfries played a crucial role in the winning goal by delivering a cross that Muldur inadvertently turned into his own net. This was the first own goal benefitting the Netherlands at the European Championships since 2004. Substitute Zeki Celik had a late chance to level but saw his shot cleared off the line.

Turkiye's set-piece prowess was evident throughout Euro 2024, scoring three goals from corners, matching records held by Spain, France, and Portugal. However, this success wasn't enough to secure their first semi-final appearance since Euro 2008.

Netherlands' Resilience

The Dutch managed just four shots in the first half, their lowest in an opening 45 minutes of a Euros match since 2004 against Portugal. Coach Ronald Koeman responded by bringing on Wout Weghorst after halftime. Despite Turkiye's spirited effort, they couldn't find an equaliser as Bertug Yildirim was sent off for dissent towards the referee.

This victory marked the Netherlands' sixth quarter-final progression at major tournaments out of eight attempts. They now face England in Dortmund for a place in the final. Koeman will hope his team can maintain their resilience and continue their journey in Euro 2024.

Turkiye's Journey

Turkiye impressed many as they emerged as one of the surprise packages of this tournament. Despite falling short of reaching their first semi-final since Euro 2008, they can hold their heads high for their performances throughout Euro 2024.

The Netherlands' next challenge is against England in Dortmund on Wednesday. Fans will be eager to see if Koeman's side can continue their impressive run and secure a place in the final.
