Former Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick has committed to Middlesbrough as head coach until 2027. Carrick, who initially joined the club in 2022, was nearing the final year of his three-year contract. His tenure has seen him linked with Premier League clubs due to his impressive performance at Teesside.
Under Carrick's leadership, Middlesbrough secured a fourth-place finish in the Championship during the 2022-23 season. Despite their strong performance, they were defeated by Coventry City in the play-off semi-finals. The following season, the team finished eighth and missed out on the play-offs but reached the EFL Cup semi-finals. They won the first leg against Chelsea 1-0 but suffered a heavy 6-1 defeat in the return leg.

Announcing Carrick's new contract, Middlesbrough FC tweeted: "We’re delighted to announce that Michael Carrick has signed a new three-year contract with #Boro #UTB" on June 3, 2024.
In an interview with the club's media channels, Carrick expressed his sentiments about the extension. "I think having that attachment, that trust and that belief within the club is really important. We’ve certainly got that," he said. "That’s what still gives me the great feeling that I had when I first walked through the door."
Carrick emphasized that while the new contract is significant, it doesn't alter his approach or objectives. "It feels like a big step as a headline, as a statement, but really it doesn’t change anything I do or how I approach it—it just carries on what we’re trying to achieve," he added.
