Lionel Messi Rules Out Paris Olympics Participation, Prioritises Copa America

Lionel Messi has confirmed he will not participate in the Paris Olympics, citing the difficulty of playing two consecutive tournaments. Messi is currently preparing for Argentina's Copa America title defence, which kicks off against Canada on June 20. Argentina will also face Chile and Peru in Group A, with the final scheduled for July 14. The Olympic tournament in Paris starts just ten days later.

Speculation had arisen about Messi potentially joining the Olympic squad, as teams are allowed three overage players in the primarily under-23 event. However, the 36-year-old, who won a gold medal in Beijing 16 years ago, has decided against it. This decision followed discussions with Argentina under-23s coach and former teammate Javier Mascherano.

Messi Skips Olympics for Copa America

"I talked to Mascherano and we both understood the situation," Messi told ESPN. "It's hard to think about the Olympics right now because we're in Copa America. It would be two or three straight months of not being with the club, and more than anything, I'm not at an age to be in everything. I have to choose carefully, and it would be too much to play two straight tournaments."

Messi reflected on his previous Olympic experience fondly. "I've been very lucky to play in the Olympics and win it together with [Mascherano]. It was a wonderful experience on a football level. Olympics, under-20s, memories I'll never forget," he added.

The decision underscores Messi's focus on managing his workload as he continues to play at an elite level. With Argentina aiming to defend their Copa America title successfully, Messi's presence will be crucial for their campaign.

The Copa America final will take place on July 14, just ten days before the start of the Olympic tournament in Paris. This tight schedule played a significant role in Messi's decision to opt out of the Olympics.

Messi's choice highlights the challenges athletes face when balancing club commitments with international duties. As one of football's most celebrated players, his decisions often set a precedent for others in similar situations.

Argentina's under-23 squad will now look towards other potential overage players to bolster their chances at the Olympics. Meanwhile, fans will eagerly watch Messi lead Argentina in their quest for another Copa America title.
