Euro 2024: Mbappe's Milestone Goal Offset By Lewandowski In France-Poland Draw
Kylian Mbappe's first goal at the European Championships was not enough as France drew 1-1 with Poland in their final group game at Euro 2024. Mbappe scored from the penalty spot in the 56th minute, but Robert Lewandowski equalised for Poland. Lewandowski's goal also came from a penalty, converted on his second attempt to secure Poland's only point of the tournament.
France finished second in Group D after Austria defeated the Netherlands in another match. Poland, already eliminated, played for pride and started brightly. Piotr Zielinski forced Mike Maignan into an early save with a half-volley. Lukasz Skorupski made crucial saves at the other end, denying Theo Hernandez and Ousmane Dembele.

Mbappe had two great chances to score before half-time. His first shot was tipped wide by Skorupski, who then blocked another attempt from France's captain. The battle continued into the second half as Skorupski saved a curling shot from Mbappe. However, Jakub Kiwior's foul on Dembele gave France a penalty, which Mbappe converted.
"13 - Kylian Mbapp equals Just Fontaine (13) for the most goals scored with France in major tournaments (World Cup + EURO) and is now second only to Michel Platini (14). Captain."

Lewandowski almost gave Poland a lead shortly after France's goal but missed narrowly. He eventually scored after Dayot Upamecano fouled Karol Swiderski in the box. Although Maignan saved Lewandowski's initial penalty, he had moved off his line early, allowing Lewandowski to score on his second try.
"Robert Lewandowski is the third player to score at four-plus Euros (also Cristiano Ronaldo, Luka Modric). He’s the only player to have netted at each of the last four editions."

This match saw Antoine Griezmann make his 33rd appearance at major tournaments, setting a record for French outfield players by surpassing Lilian Thuram. Despite creating many chances, France struggled to finish them off in the first half.
Poland exited Euro 2024 without a win but avoided losing all three group games for the first time in their history. Lewandowski returned from injury and had the most shots for Poland, ensuring they did not leave empty-handed.
Mbappe ended his goal drought at European Championships with his 23rd shot of the competition. This goal marked his 13th at major tournaments for France, tying Just Fontaine's record and trailing only Michel Platini (14).
Among European players since 2018, only Harry Kane has matched Mbappe's tally of 13 goals in major tournaments. France missed Mbappe significantly during their goalless draw with the Netherlands earlier in the tournament.
The draw means that while France progresses further into Euro 2024, Poland exits with some pride restored thanks to Lewandowski’s efforts.
