Mbappe's Injury Casts Shadow Over France's Euro 2024 Triumph Against Austria
Kylian Mbappe's late head injury overshadowed France's Euro 2024 victory over Austria, leaving Didier Deschamps concerned about the star forward. The Real Madrid-bound player sustained a nose injury after an aerial challenge with Austria's Kevin Danso before being withdrawn on Monday. France secured a 1-0 win in Dusseldorf, moving level with Group D leaders Netherlands, but Deschamps now faces uncertainty over Mbappe's fitness ahead of Friday's match against Ronald Koeman's team.
"His nose is not good at all," said Deschamps, who achieved his 100th win as France's head coach with the victory over Ralf Rangnick's side. "Even if it's just the nose, it's the big negative point for us tonight." Mbappe missed a key opportunity in the second half, continuing his wait for a European Championship goal. The former Paris Saint-Germain player has yet to score from 18 shots in the tournament, though he has netted 12 times from 39 attempts at the World Cup.

Mbappe played a crucial role in France's win by delivering the cross that led to Max Wober's own goal in the first half. This own goal marked France as the first European team at major tournaments (World Cup/Euros) to benefit from 10 own-goals, four more than any other side. Germany follows with six own-goals.
Despite the injury and missed opportunities, Deschamps expressed satisfaction with his team's performance. "Happy with what the players did even if we missed opportunities to double the tally," he said. "It was not perfect but we were solid. We could have been more efficient offensively but it's good to start with a win. There's quality and talent but being solid and working together is also important. We're not going to be over-confident, but it's a good start."
N'Golo Kante was named Player of the Match for his effective midfield display, marking his return to international play after a two-year absence. Kante made more successful tackles than any other French player, tying with Jules Kounde at two tackles each. He also led in interceptions for Les Bleus with two.
"Everything was not perfect but we have the result we wanted; this is a good start," Kante said. "There are solid foundations; we have to be more efficient. It makes me happy to be back. Things have changed; it feels good to get back into this jersey."
Austria's Performance
The defeat ended Austria's seven-game unbeaten streak in all competitions (W6 D1) and was only their second loss in their last 17 matches (W12 D3). Former Manchester United manager Ralf Rangnick refrained from blaming any individual players for the loss.
"We are all very disappointed...we allowed France to go ahead; they didn't shoot their goal; it was an unlucky own goal by us," Rangnick said. "I think no one can accuse the team of not being engaged enough, not running enough. They gave their everything. They didn't always make the right decisions with the ball. But it isn't easy; the French were aggressive and played compactly, and that wasn't a surprise."
France will now prepare for their next Group D match against the Netherlands on Friday, hoping that Mbappe will recover in time to participate.
