France's head coach Didier Deschamps has confirmed that Kylian Mbappe will need surgery following a nose injury sustained during France's victory over Austria at Euro 2024. The incident occurred late in the match on Monday, and the 25-year-old forward is expected to miss Friday's game against the Netherlands.

Mbappe, who is set to join Real Madrid officially in July, may be sidelined for the remainder of the group stage. Deschamps, speaking in an interview published on France's official Twitter account on Tuesday, stated that further examinations are scheduled to assess Mbappe's condition. "The medical staff did what was necessary to reduce it as much as possible," Deschamps said. "Even if it will not be immediately, he will have to undergo surgery."

Deschamps added that Mbappe showed some improvement on Tuesday morning but emphasized the need for daily monitoring. The French Football Federation (FFF) president Philippe Diallo echoed Deschamps' cautious approach. Diallo noted that initial responses were positive and no surgery is planned at the moment.

"Now it is too soon to know if he will be able to play for the remainder of the tournament," Diallo told reporters. "Obviously there were some medical examinations performed on site to know more about Kylian's nose and they made some conclusions pretty quickly."

Diallo explained that efforts were made to mitigate the effects of Mbappe's fracture to allow him to continue participating in the tournament. However, he reiterated that they are waiting for further developments before making any definitive decisions regarding Mbappe's return.
