Deschamps Backs Mbappe To Make History At Euro 2024 Amid Challenges

Kylian Mbappe may not be performing at his peak, but Didier Deschamps believes the France captain is set on creating more history at Euro 2024. The Real Madrid-bound forward has netted just once in Germany, a penalty against Poland in the final group game.

Despite his struggles, Deschamps defended Mbappe ahead of the semi-final against Spain in Munich. "Don't you think he has already made enough history, with what he has done so far? He wants to make even more history," Deschamps said in an interview quoted by Telefoot.

Mbappe's Historic Quest at Euro 2024

Mbappe's overall performance at the European Championships contrasts sharply with his World Cup record. He has scored only one goal from 34 shots at the Euros, compared to 12 goals from 39 attempts at the World Cup.

This tournament, Mbappe has been hindered by a broken nose, requiring him to wear a protective mask. The 25-year-old has expressed frustration with this equipment, which some believe has affected his form.

Deschamps highlighted the efforts made to ensure Mbappe's participation despite his injuries. "We did everything we could with him, with the medical staff, to get him to be here. During the preparation, he had a little back problem too, but Kylian is here," Deschamps noted.

France's Goal Scoring Woes

The French team’s lack of goals might be linked to Mbappe's form. In their five Euro 2024 matches, they have scored just four goals (three for and one against), all from penalties or own goals. None of their 128 non-penalty shots have resulted in a goal (86 for France and 42 for opponents).

France is also unique since 1980 for having over 50 non-penalty shots in a Euros tournament without scoring any of them. This statistic underscores their current offensive struggles.

Upcoming Semi-Final Challenge

Deschamps and Mbappe are eager to break this streak as they prepare to face an in-form Spain side. A victory would secure them a place in the final against either the Netherlands or England.

"Even if he's not 100%, I know very well that for the opponent, knowing he's playing makes them think and forces them to adapt," Deschamps added.

The French team hopes that Mbappe can overcome these challenges and lead them to victory. His presence on the field remains crucial despite his recent difficulties.
