De Zerbi Ready To Support Greenwood Amid Marseille Transfer Talks
Roberto De Zerbi has expressed no intention of forming an early opinion on Mason Greenwood amid growing speculation about the Manchester United forward's potential move to Marseille. Greenwood, who spent last season on loan at Getafe, has not played for United since his suspension in January 2022 following his arrest on suspicion of attempted rape and assault. The 22-year-old faced charges of attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault causing actual bodily harm. However, these charges were dropped after key witnesses withdrew and new evidence emerged, making a conviction unlikely.Marseille is reportedly interested in acquiring Greenwood from Old Trafford. Reports suggest an initial loan deal with an option for a permanent transfer valued around £27 million ($35 million). Valencia has also reportedly made a bid for the Manchester United attacker, while clubs like Lazio, Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, and Juventus are monitoring the situation.Newly appointed Marseille head coach Roberto De Zerbi stated he would defend Greenwood as he would any other player if the one-cap England international joins the team. "Mason is a world-class player but we have not recruited him yet," De Zerbi said at Tuesday's press conference. "I don't know what happened but I am not used to getting involved in my players' private lives. But if he comes here, you have to know that I treat all my players like my sons. I can tell them off in private but I would never attack them in public."Greenwood had a productive season at Getafe, scoring eight goals and providing six assists during his loan spell. This performance has kept him on the radar of several top European clubs.
