Maresca Reflects On Chelsea's Strategy After Wrexham Draw Ends In Stalemate
Enzo Maresca acknowledged that Chelsea might concede goals while playing out from the back after their 2-2 draw with Wrexham in his debut match. The game, held at Levi's Stadium in San Francisco, saw Chelsea come from behind to secure a draw against the League One side owned by Hollywood actors Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds.Christopher Nkunku gave Chelsea the lead after 35 minutes. However, two defensive mistakes allowed Wrexham to score twice in the second half. Luke Bolton capitalised on Lesley Ugochukwu's failure to intercept Seb Revan's cross, while Jack Marriott scored following an error by Josh Acheampong.Chelsea managed to avoid defeat when Ugochukwu equalised eight minutes from time. Despite the defensive lapses, Maresca defended his team's approach of building from the back during a post-match interview."It is one of the risks that you have trying to build from behind," Maresca stated. "You are going to concede in different ways, so you need to decide in which way you need to concede a goal." He added that teams attempting this style might let in goals but would likely score more than they concede.Maresca highlighted that there were many areas for improvement but noted that the team had only started training two weeks ago. "Tonight was important to start seeing the identity of the team and the identity is there," he remarked.
