Andy Burnham, the Mayor of Greater Manchester, has expressed his belief that the development of a world-class stadium for Manchester United could initiate the most significant regeneration project in the north of England. The Premier League club recently announced the formation of a task force to explore options for regenerating the Old Trafford area, with a top-class ground as its focal point. United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has shown a preference for constructing a new stadium on adjacent club-owned land over redeveloping the current ground, describing it as a once-in-a-century opportunity.

Despite investments in Media City, Burnham noted that the wider area has seen limited development in recent decades.
