Manchester City Opens Premier League Title Defence With Victory Over Chelsea
Manchester City began their Premier League title defence with a commanding 2-0 victory over Chelsea. Goals from Erling Haaland and Mateo Kovacic ensured the absence of several key players went unnoticed.
Despite missing Rodri, Phil Foden, Kyle Walker, and John Stones due to their late pre-season returns, City took the lead within 20 minutes. Haaland muscled past two defenders before chipping the ball over Chelsea's goalkeeper Robert Sanchez.

Erling Haaland marked his 100th appearance for Manchester City in this match. Since joining from Borussia Dortmund in 2022, he has been prolific, scoring 91 goals and winning the Premier League Golden Boot twice.
Proud to have played my 100th game for this amazing club and celebrate it with a win and a goal! 🫶🏻 pic.twitter.com/AvJVr0BT2Z

City continued to dominate as Sanchez denied efforts from Jeremy Doku and Bernardo Silva. Chelsea's Nicolas Jackson had a goal disallowed for offside after Ederson spilled Cole Palmer's weak shot.
In the second half, City maintained control with Haaland testing Sanchez again. Rico Lewis had a goal disallowed shortly after making a crucial clearance to deny Pedro Neto a debut goal for Chelsea.
Kovacic secured the win with a long-range strike against his former club. He capitalised on a loose ball in midfield to score from 20 yards out, capping off an impressive performance.
