Manchester City Abu Dhabi League: Developing Young Football Talent

Oscar Pope, a first-team star for Manchester City, and Nedum Onuoha, a club legend, recently shared their thoughts on the impact of competitive sports for young athletes, highlighting their experiences at the Manchester City Abu Dhabi League.

During their visit to Abu Dhabi, they attended a range of matches within the league, which is currently in its second season. This event underscored the league's significant contribution to the youth and junior football landscape in Abu Dhabi since its inception.

Manchester City League Boosts Youth Development

The visit to Abu Dhabi by Pope and Onuoha was part of Manchester City's title tour celebrating the team's fourth successive Premier League title—one of the globe's premier football accolades. Fans in the UAE had the unique chance to celebrate the victory alongside the players, take photos with the trophy, and also see other trophies won by the team, including the FIFA Club World Cup and the Community Shield.

Pope, a midfielder for Manchester City, remarked, "It was great to see the young players and young players competing with smiles on their faces. This is a really special tournament and it will definitely help their development both as a player and as a person. You can see how much they enjoy being there and it is inspiring." This sentiment was echoed by Onuoha, who found the high level of organization and the vibrant, competitive yet enjoyable environment of the league to be particularly striking.

The Manchester City Abu Dhabi League showcases the club's commitment to nurturing young talent, with the current season featuring 189 teams across age groups from under 7 to under 18. These matches are held every week at Zayed Sports City, providing 2,500 young athletes, both boys and girls, the opportunity to compete in a professional and supportive setting. The league aims to offer a holistic development environment, focusing on both football skills and essential life skills like teamwork, leadership, and problem-solving.

Simon Hewitt, Head of Football Operations MENA at Manchester City, highlighted the league's role as an extension of the club's dedication to youth football development in Abu Dhabi. "Our vision when the league was established was to provide players from across Abu Dhabi with the opportunity to play football in a competitive and professional environment, with a focus on having fun and creating a positive atmosphere. We have come a long way towards achieving this in our first season, and we continue to work tirelessly to develop and improve the league year after year," Hewitt stated.

Moreover, Manchester City and City Football Group's commitment to grassroots football extends beyond the league. Through City Football Schools, which operates across ten locations in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and Ajman, the club offers coaching to players aged 3 to 18, aiming to develop their potential in a fun and secure atmosphere. Last season, over 3,500 young athletes participated in these sessions, with 120 joining the Talented Player Programme and six moving on to professional academies.

As Onuoha looks forward to his next visit, the league's future seems promising, with its blend of professional organization, high-level competition, and an emphasis on enjoyment and personal growth offering a unique and enriching experience for young footballers in Abu Dhabi.
