Manchester United Confirms Dan Ashworth As Sporting Director From Newcastle
Manchester United have confirmed Dan Ashworth as their new sporting director after finalising an agreement with Newcastle United. Ashworth had expressed his desire to join Manchester United in February, leading to his placement on gardening leave while negotiations took place. Previously, Ashworth held roles at the Football Association and Brighton and Hove Albion.
A joint statement from both clubs read: "Newcastle United and Manchester United have reached an agreement for the immediate release of Dan Ashworth from his contractual obligations at Newcastle United. The terms of this agreement remain confidential between the clubs. Newcastle United thank Dan for his services and wish him well for the future."

Ashworth was reportedly prepared to take legal action against Newcastle to facilitate his move, but a deal was eventually reached. This appointment comes as Manchester United prepare for their first pre-season under Jim Ratcliffe's regime. Ratcliffe gained full control of football operations after purchasing a 25% stake from the Glazer family last year.
Ashworth will collaborate closely with Erik ten Hag, who remains as manager following Manchester United's FA Cup final victory over Manchester City in May. Despite overseeing the club's worst-ever Premier League finish of eighth last season, Ten Hag is currently negotiating a new contract. INEOS had considered other managers like Mauricio Pochettino, Thomas Tuchel, Thomas Frank, and Kieran McKenna before deciding to retain Ten Hag.
The coaching team at Manchester United is also set for changes ahead of the 2024-25 season. Former striker Ruud van Nistelrooy and Rene Hake are expected to join the club, adding fresh expertise to Ten Hag’s staff.
Manchester United are entering a new era with these significant appointments and changes in their management structure. The club aims to improve its performance under the guidance of experienced professionals like Ashworth and Ten Hag.
