Harry Maguire Defends England's Euro 2024 Team Against 'Ridiculous' Criticism
Harry Maguire has defended his England team-mates following their performance at Euro 2024, calling the criticism "a bit ridiculous." England reached consecutive European Championship finals but faced defeat in Berlin, similar to their loss at Wembley three years prior. Gareth Southgate became the first head coach in the tournament's history to lose two finals.
Despite reaching back-to-back finals, England's performances in Germany were met with disapproval. Fans jeered and threw cups towards Southgate and the players. Southgate's defensive tactics were criticised, although only Walter Winterbottom (383) and Alf Ramsey (224) have overseen more England goals than his 213.
Southgate ended his eight-year tenure as England's head coach two days after the tournament concluded. He won 59.8% of his 102 games in charge. Under his leadership, England reached more major tournament finals in four attempts (two) than they did in their first 23 appearances at the World Cup and Euros (one).

Maguire played 63 times during Southgate's time in charge, a total only surpassed by Harry Kane (81), Kyle Walker (70), Jordan Pickford, and John Stones (both 68). Maguire missed Euro 2024 due to an injury sustained in May, which also kept him out of Manchester United's FA Cup victory against Manchester City.
Maguire defended his team-mates and former head coach, stating that tournament football is less expansive with fewer risks taken. "Yes, performances might not have been amazing but it is tournament football," Maguire told BBC Sport. "It is not as expansive. There are far less risks taken."
He questioned the expectations of fans and media: "I just don't know what the media or fans expected of this team. Was it to go and beat Serbia 4-0 in the first game and then beat Denmark 3-0? Did they think it was just going to be a walk in the park?"
Maguire's Frustration Over Missing Euro 2024
Euro 2024 was the first major tournament Maguire missed during his international career. He had become a mainstay in central defence alongside Stones, making 17 appearances at major tournaments with seven clean sheets. "To miss out was tough," said Maguire.
"It has been really frustrating, working all season to get myself mentally and physically at the top of my game and be in a position to feel I could really make a difference for Manchester United and my country."
Despite the criticism, Maguire stands by his team-mates' efforts during Euro 2024. The challenges faced by Southgate’s squad highlight the unpredictable nature of tournament football.
