James Maddison And Curtis Jones Cut From England's Euro 2024 Squad
James Maddison and Curtis Jones have been excluded from England's squad for Euro 2024. Both players were part of Gareth Southgate's initial 33-man roster but did not feature in Monday's 3-0 friendly win over Bosnia and Herzegovina. Tottenham's Maddison was a substitute, while Liverpool's Jones remained on the bench.
Reports on Wednesday indicated that Maddison was the first to be informed of his exclusion, with Jones following shortly after. Jarell Quansah, also from Liverpool, is not expected to make the final squad either. England confirmed via social media on Thursday that both players had left the camp ahead of Friday's match against Iceland at Wembley Stadium.

Maddison expressed his disappointment on X, stating, "Devastated doesn't quite cut it. I trained well and worked hard all week but if I'm honest with myself, my form for Spurs when coming back from injury in the second half of the season probably wasn't at the levels I had set, which gave Gareth a decision to make."
He added, "I still thought there would be a space for me in a 26-man squad as I feel I bring something different and had been a mainstay in this whole qualifying campaign but the manager has made the decision and I have to respect that. I'll be back, I have no doubt."
Maddison started the season strongly after joining Tottenham from Leicester City but saw his form decline following an ankle injury in November. Before his injury, he led all Premier League players in chances created (31), was joint-top for assists (five), and ranked third for expected assists (3.2 xA) after 11 games.
After returning from injury, Maddison recorded four more assists, created 36 chances, and amassed 3.1 xA in 18 additional appearances. Jones made 23 Premier League appearances for Liverpool in the 2023-24 season, starting 14 games. He scored one goal and provided one assist as Liverpool finished third under Jurgen Klopp.
On Thursday, twenty-seven England players participated in full training. Lewis Dunk, Harry Maguire, and Luke Shaw followed individual programmes as Maguire and Shaw continue their recovery from injuries.
