Lucas Leiva Confident In Liverpool's Premier League Title Bid

Lucas Leiva, a former Liverpool midfielder, believes the Reds have the potential to compete for the Premier League title next season. Liverpool was in contention with Manchester City and Arsenal for most of last season. However, a series of poor results in April saw them fall behind, finishing nine points adrift of Pep Guardiola's team in Jurgen Klopp's final season.

Arne Slot has taken over from Klopp, chosen for his similar tactical approach. There are questions about whether Liverpool can maintain their performance under new management. Leiva, who played for Liverpool from 2007 to 2017, is optimistic about their chances. "I think Liverpool can challenge against [Manchester] City, against Arsenal," Leiva told Stats Perform.

Liverpool's Title Challenge Insight

Leiva highlighted that Liverpool missed out in the last four weeks of the previous season. He acknowledged the difficulty of competing with strong teams like Manchester City and Arsenal but remains hopeful. "Liverpool showed last year the quality to challenge with a lot of young players coming through," he said. "I don't see why Liverpool could not challenge Man City this year for the Premier League."

Despite the optimism surrounding Slot's appointment, there are concerns about key players' futures at Anfield. Mohamed Salah is entering the final year of his contract and has drawn interest from Saudi Pro League clubs. Since joining in 2017, Salah has scored 211 goals for Liverpool, although his Premier League tally of 18 goals last season was his lowest.

Leiva believes Salah still has much to offer under the new manager. "Mo, what a player he has been for the club," Leiva said. "We know that he came under Jurgen, but I think Mo has got a point to prove as well now." He emphasised Salah's importance both on and off the pitch and expressed confidence in his continued contribution to Liverpool.

Another crucial player facing contract uncertainty is captain Virgil van Dijk. Since joining from Southampton in 2018, Van Dijk has been a key figure at Anfield, making 197 appearances. Leiva is confident Van Dijk will stay with Liverpool. "I expect Virgil to stay. He's under contract," he added.

The Importance of Retaining Key Players

Leiva also mentioned Van Dijk's role in helping Slot integrate into the team due to their shared Dutch background. "He's the captain of the team," Leiva said. "He had a great Euro, and like Mo, he will be really important." He hopes Van Dijk will return from his holiday recharged and ready for the new season.

Trent Alexander-Arnold is another player whose future is uncertain as he enters the new season without a long-term contract extension. The right-back has been integral to Liverpool since joining their academy at age six in 2004. Last season, he led all Liverpool defenders in attacking sequences (151).

The Role of Home-Grown Talent

Leiva stressed the importance of keeping Alexander-Arnold at Liverpool: "I've known Trent since he was 16 years old." He praised Alexander-Arnold's growth and leadership qualities within the team. "He's a vice-captain of the team," Leiva said. "He's grown so much in the last few seasons."

Leiva believes retaining home-grown talent like Alexander-Arnold is crucial for Liverpool's future success: "It's really important to keep your best players, and Trent is one of them." He noted that Alexander-Arnold embodies what it means to be a Liverpool player and emphasised his significance both on and off the pitch.

The upcoming season presents challenges for Liverpool with new management and contract uncertainties among key players. However, Leiva remains optimistic about their prospects: "I think these players now will play a big part in the new team." His confidence reflects hope that Liverpool can compete at the highest level once again.
