Wiegman Calls For Greater Clinical Edge As Lionesses Near Euro 2025 Qualification
England's head coach, Sarina Wiegman, praised her team's performance in their 2-1 win over the Republic of Ireland but expressed a desire for more goals as they edge closer to Euro 2025 qualification. Alessio Russo finished a well-executed team play, and Georgia Stanway converted a penalty, securing the Lionesses' victory in the Group A3 match at Carrow Road.
Despite France's identical 2-1 victory over Sweden, England only needs a draw against Sweden in Gothenburg on Tuesday to secure their spot in the finals. The Lionesses dominated possession with nearly two-thirds of the ball but managed to score only two out of their 16 chances. Julie Russell scored a late consolation goal for Ireland.

"[I am] happy with the result," Wiegman told ITV. "I thought we started really well and scored an incredible goal. The best goals are those that involve many players, so that was pleasing."
Wiegman acknowledged her team's strong start but highlighted areas for improvement. "After that, we created a lot of chances but should have played more in the pockets and in behind. We hoped to score more goals, and of course, I was very frustrated with their goal in the last minute," she added.
Looking ahead to Tuesday's game against Sweden, Wiegman noted the difference in playing styles. "Sweden on Tuesday will be a completely different game; they play a different system. What we want to do is, of course, be at the finals. Sweden have to win, and we'll be ready for that."
Player Reactions
Forward Jess Park echoed Wiegman's sentiments about conceding the late goal but remained positive about their overall performance. "Job's done. We got three points," Park said. "We are disappointed to have conceded that goal, but we had lots of opportunities to put the ball in the net, and we're happy with the three points."
The team remains focused on their upcoming match against Sweden. "We're so focused [on Tuesday's game]. We've been working really hard and just want to get those three points," Park added.
