Lionesses' Leah Williamson Sees Brighter Future For England Post-Euro 2024
England's Lionesses captain Leah Williamson believes future victories will be even more rewarding after their Euro 2024 heartbreak. She defended Gareth Southgate's men's team following their 2-1 loss to Spain in the European Championship final. England became the first team to lose two consecutive Euros finals, and Southgate is the first manager to lose two separate finals in the tournament.
Williamson, who experienced a similar disappointment losing the Women's World Cup final to Spain last year, empathises with Southgate's squad. She reminded fans of the positive moments under Southgate's leadership, despite his uncertain future. "What Gareth and his team have done over the last three, four years, reaching finals and bringing that dream closer to reality, we are very lucky as fans of England, men's and women's, to be in the position that we're in," she said.

England Women's manager Sarina Wiegman also understands setbacks well. She led her team to Euro 2022 victory against Germany before facing defeat against Spain the following year. Wiegman shared her thoughts on recovery: "It takes about three weeks; it took me three weeks to get over it," she admitted. "It's very hard ... when you have given your everything, then you hope you win and when you don't, you are really disappointed."
Williamson expressed confidence that England's teams will eventually triumph. "They didn't quite get over the line to a fantastic Spanish team," she noted. "I know they'll be devastated about it; it will take a while for them to get over it. But us as a country, we've been blessed with incredible tournaments. And when those wins come, which I do believe they will, then they'll be even sweeter."
The Lionesses' captain also acknowledged the support from fans during tough times. "We fell short of what we wanted to achieve this summer, but this group gave everything and have done us proud," she said. "Your support in Germany and back home has been incredible. Thank you." pic.twitter.com/YBivqQXfJe
Overcoming Disappointment
Wiegman elaborated on dealing with losses: "But then you start thinking: Okay, did we get everything out of ourselves? Did we do everything that we could that was in our control? And then you have to accept it." She added that accepting a loss is harder than accepting a win but necessary for moving forward.
Despite recent setbacks, both Williamson and Wiegman remain optimistic about future successes for England's national teams. Their experiences highlight resilience and determination as key factors in overcoming disappointment and striving for future victories.
The journey may be challenging, but both leaders believe that perseverance will lead to eventual triumphs for England's football teams.
