Lautaro Martinez Rebounds From World Cup Frustration With Copa America Scoring Spree
Argentina's Lautaro Martinez believes he has overcome his World Cup difficulties by scoring at the Copa America. Martinez netted twice in Argentina's 2-0 win over Peru, securing their place as Group A winners. This victory ensures they advance to the quarter-finals, where they will face Venezuela, Mexico, or Ecuador.
Martinez, who led Serie A in goals for the 2023-24 season, finished the group stage as the tournament's top scorer. Despite not starting two of the three games, he also had the most shots for Argentina with nine attempts. Filling in for Lionel Messi, who was rested, Martinez excelled and feels he has moved past his World Cup struggles.

"I'm happy because I was able to score in all three group-stage games and help the team," said Martinez to TyC Sports. "I had a great season at my club and felt ready to overcome my World Cup disappointment. Preparing well for the Copa America was crucial for me."
Since his debut in the Copa America in 2019, Martinez has become the tournament's top scorer with nine goals—two in 2019, three in 2021, and four in 2024. This tally puts him ahead of both Messi and Luis Diaz, who each have five goals.
Argentina assistant Walter Samuel provided an update on Messi's fitness. "He was in the locker room and seemed better," Samuel said. "The situation is improving but it's too early to make any definitive statements. We'll continue to monitor him daily and consult with doctors."
Team Support for Messi
Martinez expressed optimism about Messi's condition: "Leo is fine; we hope he can play in the next game. I dedicated my goal to him because of what he means to us." Angel Di Maria added, "Leo is recovering well; today's victory is for him."
Argentina has won their first three matches of a Copa America on 18 occasions. However, this achievement marks only the third time they have done so in their last 12 participations (2007 and 2016 being the other instances).

The team now looks forward to their quarter-final match with confidence bolstered by Martinez’s form and hopes of Messi’s return.
