Lamine Yamal Makes History As Youngest Euro 2024 Player In Spain's Opener
Lamine Yamal has set a new record as the youngest player to participate in a European Championships game. At just 16 years and 338 days old, Yamal started for Spain in their Euro 2024 opener against Croatia in Berlin on Saturday. This achievement surpasses the previous record held by Poland's Kacper Kozlowski, who played at Euro 2020 at the age of 17 years and 246 days.
Yamal's appearance marks only his eighth cap for Spain. Spain's coach, Luis de la Fuente, praised Yamal and fellow winger Nico Williams during a press conference on Friday, describing their talent as a "gift from God."

On the Croatian side, Luka Modric has become the oldest outfield player to feature in the tournament since Lothar Matthaus played for Germany against Portugal in June 2000 at the age of 39 years and 91 days. Modric, aged 38 years and 280 days, started alongside Mateo Kovacic and Marcelo Brozovic in midfield. The trio brings a wealth of experience with a combined total of 372 international caps.
Modric's participation also places him among an elite group of European players who have appeared in nine major tournaments (World Cup/Euros). He joins Matthaus, who also appeared in nine tournaments, and Cristiano Ronaldo, who has participated in ten major tournaments before Euro 2024.
The match between Spain and Croatia not only highlighted emerging talents like Yamal but also underscored the enduring careers of seasoned players like Modric. These milestones contribute to the rich history of the UEFA European Championship, showcasing both youthful promise and veteran resilience.
As Euro 2024 progresses, fans will be keenly watching how these players influence their teams' performances. The blend of young talent and experienced leadership could prove pivotal in determining the outcomes of this prestigious tournament.
