Koeman Vows To Own Up To Netherlands Defeat By Austria In EURO 2024 Clash

Ronald Koeman has accepted responsibility for the Netherlands' loss to Austria, as the pressure on him intensifies. The Netherlands managed to equalise twice in Berlin with goals from Memphis Depay and Cody Gakpo, appearing poised to secure second place in Group D. However, Marcel Sabitzer's late goal ensured Ralf Rangnick's team topped the group, leaving Koeman's side third after France drew 1-1 with Poland.

"I am ultimately responsible. I put this team together because I thought it was the best. But that wasn't the case," Koeman stated. He expressed disappointment in himself for the team's poor start but noted that not all of their performance was subpar. "We knew that they play with high backs, so we indicated: close that passing line. Then the back zone must hold. But if one or the other doesn't happen, this is what you get."

Koeman Owns Up to Loss Against Austria

During the match, Koeman tried to instruct his central defenders to mark the advancing backs. He highlighted communication issues, especially at the beginning of the game. "The communication was also one of the bad things, especially at the beginning of the match," he added.

The Netherlands' captain Virgil Van Dijk stressed that immediate changes are necessary as they approach the knockout rounds. "We started the match weakly, in possession of the ball and in our duels. Then you are behind the game," Van Dijk said. He emphasised that they lacked energy and discussed this issue at halftime.

"This is incomprehensible, at a finals tournament. I have no explanation for this at the moment," Van Dijk continued. He urged everyone to do more and acknowledged collective responsibility for their performance. "If we want to achieve something at this European Championship, something has to change very quickly."

Austria's Achievement and Sabitzer's Milestone

Austria has now reached the knockout stages in their last two European Championships appearances, having failed to do so in 2008 and 2016. Marcel Sabitzer became the first Austrian to play 10 matches at these championships and recognised his team's need to stay focused.

"If you beat the Netherlands and win the group, then you can't be that bad," Sabitzer remarked. He stressed that advancing was their primary goal and now they need to calm down and prepare for future matches. "Now we need to calm down, clear our heads and then keep attacking."

Sabitzer reflected on football's unpredictable nature, noting how quickly things can change with ups and downs being normal. "The question is how you deal with it," he said. He praised his team's support and his own recent efforts.

"When you win like that, win the group, score the winning goal, it doesn't get any better than that," Sabitzer added. He emphasised his commitment to helping his team with assists and goals while appreciating their effective rotation system.

The Netherlands lost their first group stage game at Euros since 2012 against Portugal (2-1). As they face potential matches against strong teams like England in the last-16, both players and coaches acknowledge significant improvements are needed.

The UEFA EURO 2024 tournament continues to showcase intense competition as teams vie for advancement in a challenging environment.
