Lucas Leiva: Klopp's 'Unique' Coaching Style Ideal For England
Lucas Leiva believes Jurgen Klopp's distinctive coaching approach would be ideal for the England manager role if he were to replace Gareth Southgate. Southgate resigned after eight years following England's 2-1 loss to Spain in the Euro 2024 final earlier this month.
During his tenure, Southgate led England to their first Euros final in 2021 and another major tournament final on foreign soil. Despite these achievements, he became the first manager to lose two consecutive finals in the competition. His cautious tactics were often criticised, even though England scored 213 goals in 102 matches under his leadership.

Jurgen Klopp, who ended his nine-year tenure at Liverpool in May, is among the candidates for the vacant position. Former Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva believes Klopp would excel in this role. "I think his coaching style can adapt to any club, to any national team, because Jurgen, the way he manages, is unique," Leiva told Stats Perform.
Leiva expressed concerns about Klopp taking a break but acknowledged his potential impact on the English national team. "I don't know if he will accept that because maybe he's having a rest, having a break. But, as a Brazilian, if he gets the English national team, I'll be very worried because I know how he works," Leiva added.
Managing a national team presents unique challenges due to limited time with players. Leiva noted this but remained optimistic about Klopp's success. "Of course, with a national team you always have less time to work with the team, and the way he plays needs time. But if he gets the English national team, of course I'll be supporting him because he's a fantastic guy, a fantastic manager," said Leiva.
Klopp's ability to adapt and succeed with different teams is well-regarded. His potential appointment as England manager has generated significant interest and speculation among football fans and analysts alike.
Southgate's departure marks an end of an era for England football. The search for his successor continues as fans await news on who will lead the Three Lions next.
"And I think his style can be a success," concluded Leiva, highlighting Klopp's potential positive impact on the English national team.
