UEFA Fines Jude Bellingham, England Star To Face Switzerland Despite Incident
Jude Bellingham has been fined by UEFA for a gesture made during England's victory over Slovakia at Euro 2024. The midfielder scored an impressive overhead kick to equalise in stoppage time, keeping England's tournament hopes alive. However, after the final whistle, he was seen kissing his hand and grabbing his crotch, which some interpreted as an insult towards Slovakia's fans and bench.
Following an investigation, UEFA imposed a €30,000 fine on Bellingham along with a one-match suspended ban. This means he is eligible to play against Switzerland on Saturday, with the ban suspended for one year. Bellingham later addressed the incident on social media, stating it was an inside joke directed at close friends who attended the game. He expressed respect for Slovakia's performance.

"An inside joke gesture towards some close friends who were at the game. Nothing but respect for how that Slovakia team played tonight," Bellingham tweeted.
While Bellingham will be available for England's quarter-final against Switzerland, Turkiye’s Merih Demiral faces a different fate. Demiral has been banned for two games following his goal celebration in Turkiye's match against Austria. The defender scored twice, including the fastest-ever knockout round goal in Euros history.
Demiral celebrated his second goal with a 'wolf salute,' a gesture associated with the far-right extremist group Grey Wolves. This symbol is banned in France and Austria due to its connections with Turkiye’s ruling coalition party, the National Movement Party. Consequently, Demiral will miss Turkiye's upcoming match against the Netherlands.
Bellingham’s fine and Demiral’s suspension highlight UEFA’s strict stance on player conduct during matches. Both incidents have sparked discussions about appropriate behaviour and gestures in sports.
The penalties imposed by UEFA serve as a reminder of the governing body's commitment to maintaining decorum and respect among players and teams during international tournaments.
As England prepares for their quarter-final clash with Switzerland, they will have Bellingham available despite his recent controversy. Meanwhile, Turkiye will have to strategise without Demiral as they face the Netherlands.
