Former Wimbledon Manager And Tottenham Defender Joe Kinnear Dies Aged 77

The football world mourns the loss of Joe Kinnear, the former Tottenham defender and Wimbledon manager, who passed away at the age of 77. His family confirmed his peaceful passing surrounded by loved ones in a heartfelt statement. Kinnear's illustrious career was marked by significant achievements both on and off the pitch, including winning prestigious titles such as the FA Cup, League Cup, and UEFA Cup with Tottenham.

Born in Dublin, Kinnear's journey in football began when he joined Tottenham as a teenager in 1963, making his debut three years later. Over a decade at White Hart Lane saw him amass more than 250 appearances for the club, contributing to their FA Cup victory in 1967, UEFA Cup win in 1972, and League Cup triumphs in 1971 and 1973. His playing career concluded with a season at Brighton before transitioning into coaching.

Kinnear's coaching career took him across the globe, with stints in the United Arab Emirates, Malaysia, India, and Nepal. He returned to England to serve as Dave Mackay's assistant at Doncaster before taking the helm at Wimbledon in 1992. Under his guidance, Wimbledon achieved a sixth-placed finish in the top flight during the 1993-94 season and reached the semi-finals of both the FA Cup and League Cup in 1997.

However, Kinnear's career faced challenges, notably suffering a heart attack before a league game against Sheffield Wednesday in March 1999. This incident led him to step down from his position in June of that year. Despite health setbacks, Kinnear continued his involvement in football, taking on roles at Oxford and Luton, where he led the latter to promotion from the Third Division during the 2001-02 season.

His managerial journey also included a tenure at Nottingham Forest starting in February 2004 and a notable period at Newcastle where he replaced Kevin Keegan in 2008. Unfortunately, health issues persisted as Kinnear was hospitalized ahead of a match against West Brom in February 2009 due to illness that necessitated a heart bypass operation.

Kinnear's legacy extends beyond his managerial accomplishments; he also earned 26 caps for the Republic of Ireland during his playing career. His wife Bonnie disclosed in 2021 that Kinnear had been living with dementia since 2015, highlighting the personal battles he faced alongside his professional achievements.

Joe Kinnear's contribution to football will be remembered by fans and peers alike for his dedication to the sport both as a player and manager. His passing is a significant loss to the football community.
