Jesus Navas Confirms Retirement Following Euro 2024 Final With England
Jesus Navas has announced his retirement from international football after Spain's Euro 2024 final against England on Sunday. The 38-year-old will conclude a 15-year international career, being the last player from Spain's 2010 World Cup and 2012 European Championship-winning teams.
Navas has played three matches in this tournament, captaining Spain in their final Group B game against Albania and filling in for the suspended Dani Carvajal at right-back during the semi-final win over France. He admitted to playing through pain in recent years, particularly with a hip issue that has troubled him for four or five years.

Speaking before the final, Navas drew parallels between the current Spanish squad and the team that won three major international titles from 2008 to 2012. He only revealed his decision to retire after a conversation with captain Alvaro Morata.
"[Morata] told me that it was time for me to speak since it is my last game with Spain!" Navas shared during a pre-match press conference. "I have been having a problem with my hip for four or five years, but playing for my country is everything for me. I just want to leave everything on the pitch."
Navas expressed immense pride in representing Spain, stating, "You have to die for every moment here, for your team and your country. It is the biggest thing, and I am so proud of that." Despite the physical toll, he emphasized giving his all on match days while maintaining humility.
A Unique Journey
The Sevilla wing-back reflected on his journey, saying, "I am excited about everything that I have done in football and in the national team. Being here as a 38-year-old is unique and incredible." He highlighted the team's unity both on and off the pitch during their successful years.
Navas will also end his professional career later this year. His dedication to football and his national team has been evident throughout his career, making him a respected figure in Spanish football history.
The Spanish squad's camaraderie was evident when they played together, which Navas believes is still present today. This unity has been a significant factor in their past successes and continues to be crucial as they prepare for Sunday's final.
As Navas prepares to step away from international football, he leaves behind a legacy of dedication and passion. His contributions have been invaluable to Spain's achievements over the past decade and a half.
