Iordanescu Hits Back At 'Shameful' Allegations Over Euro 2024 Draw With Slovakia

Romania's head coach, Edward Iordanescu, expressed his anger over suggestions that his team might manipulate a draw with Slovakia to secure Euro 2024 progression. With all four teams in Group E level on points before the final matchday, a draw between Romania and Slovakia would have guaranteed both teams' advancement to the last 16, regardless of Belgium's result against Ukraine.

Iordanescu's squad emerged as unexpected Group E winners after their 1-1 draw with Slovakia, combined with Belgium's goalless draw on Wednesday. He strongly refuted claims that his team would play for or attempt to manipulate a draw. "I believe it was clear that both teams gave everything for 80 minutes," Iordanescu told reporters. "Everybody gave their best."

Iordanescu Denies Euro 2024 Fix Claims

Former Romania international Danut Lupu had previously suggested in an interview with AS.Ro that a draw had been prearranged and there was no point risking a loss. However, these claims were dismissed once the match began, as both teams fired 22 shots between them, with nine on target in a closely contested game in Frankfurt.

Iordanescu criticised those who doubted his team's integrity. "To speak before a game and to throw mud at the teams and players is shameful," he said. "They should have waited and seen and then judged us." He added that such accusations were not only directed at the team but also at their fans and everyone involved.

The Romanian coach praised the unwavering support from their fans. "Almost the whole stadium was yellow," he noted. "They followed us everywhere – at the train station, hotel, during trips and training sessions." He expressed hope that this support would continue.

Romania's reward for their efforts will be a last-16 clash with the Netherlands, while Slovakia will face England. Despite the controversy, Iordanescu remains confident in his team's character and determination.

"We showed that we have character," Iordanescu stated. "If we were going to lose and go home, we would have gone home with our dignity intact." The Romanian squad demonstrated resilience and integrity throughout the tournament.

As Romania, Belgium, and Slovakia advance to the round of 16, fans eagerly anticipate the upcoming matches. The dedication of Romania's supporters has been remarkable throughout Euro 2024.

The Romanian coach hopes that their journey will continue with strong backing from their passionate fans. The team's performance has been a testament to their hard work and commitment.
